15 ways to increase a small room

Small rooms are cozy, compact and efficient, but often they feel cramped and difficult to keep in order. Fortunately, there are 15 tricky tricks that will help make the room more comfortable.

Light color range

Dark colors should not be in too small rooms. We already wrote that lighter colors give the impression of a larger area. And it is true. Dark color schemes, although fashionable and convenient for creating designs, are best used in large areas. When dark colors are used in small rooms, it can create a suffocating sensation, as if the walls are approaching the center. This situation creates restrictions.

Furniture with open legs

The choice of furniture with legs opens up a small space, making it visually large. Compared to large pieces of furniture that stand directly on the floor, it may seem too bulky for a small living area +, and furniture with legs turns the eye up and creates the illusion of more light and space in a small room.

Clean windows

Stay away from bulky window curtains, which are a heavy and decorative element for a small space. They may look beautiful, but curtains, linings, cornices and holders made of solid material, do not let in a lot of natural light. Use the light from the windows, so that it penetrates into every corner. And for this, the curtains should be light and light. Think of lattice blinds, very transparent lace curtains or bamboo curtains. They provide privacy by allowing the sun to percolate through the material.

The magic of mirrors

They are the perfect accessory for larger rooms. Mirrors can create an illusion. They can be installed on the sliding doors of the cabinet or as a covering for the whole wall (preferably near the window). Mirrors serve two useful purposes: first, images, accessories, wall hangings, furniture, and light from lamps or recessed lighting will be reflected in the room. Secondly, during the day, when natural sunlight penetrates through the windows, it is reflected from the mirrors, making the room brighter and lighter.

Color accents on the shelves

Keep items with the same color on the open shelves. This contributes to the fact that a small room looks more organized and tidy, rather than cluttered and cramped. It also helps to place items on open shelves and use them for display and storage.

Strips on the walls

Vertical and horizontal stripes on the walls will help create the illusion of more space. Vertically directed upwards striped wallpapers direct attention upward, making the room visually taller, and horizontal stripes widen the room. Remember to choose colors that blend with the rest of the wallpaper on the walls and fabrics in the room.

Multifunctional furniture

To make the most of the space in a small room, decorate it with furniture that can serve a dual purpose, for example, a sofa with a sliding storage space, an ottoman that opens for additional storage, or a pouf that can serve as a coffee table. Furniture that can be folded, reduced and consist of several folding objects is also a great way to design a space. Fold the table in the dining room until it is needed, replace the full-size chair with a medium-sized chair and footstool, or replace the traditional bed with a sofa bed or couch, which can also serve as a sofa.

Ceiling features

Create the illusion that your small room is much larger than it actually is by installing a molding of stucco (plaster or polyurethane) about 20 cm from the ceiling around the perimeter of the entire room. Paint the ceiling above the stucco in a color different from the wall under the stucco. The strip under the ceiling should be different from the color of the walls, it is better if it is lighter. In this case, the ceiling can be white or cream, and the walls - pastel in pale beige or pale blue tones.

Mess is the enemy of small rooms

Too much confusion and chaos among things makes the room visually smaller. The proverb “less is more” is true when too many things take up precious space. A quick way to make a room clean by reducing the number of decorative accessories, trinkets, artificial plants and flowers, or any other items you have that don't make sense. Reducing confusion has a positive effect on the visual size of the room.

Light floor

As is the case with color schemes, the choice of light flooring gives the impression of a huge space. Floors of dark wood cover with a light carpet, giving the impression of a light surface. It is advisable to cover the entire floor area with lighter materials.

Monochromatic tones

A single color palette in a room with different shades or textures will create a feeling of openness and spaciousness. A good role will be played by such palettes as gentle tones of ivory, cream-pearl, light blue and gray-yellow. Against their background, dark furniture and accessories will be appropriate. Colored cushions in bright colors emphasize the character and variety of the palette.

Built-in storage cabinet

Sometimes the bathroom does not have enough storage space. If there is no space on the floor, consider a built-in closet that uses the open space inside the walls. You can make this useful cabinet by breaking through the wall in the hallway or in another spare room, it will look great along with two other cabinets hanging on the wall in the bathroom.

Transparent furniture

Choose transparent furniture such as a glass coffee table or clear acrylic chair. Transparent furniture visually opens the space, but at the same time saves usable space, does not conflict with other furniture (colored) and serves as a unique design element.

Floor to ceiling bookcase

A floor-to-ceiling bookcase accentuates the height of the room, while adding plenty of storage space to save space. Such cabinets are best made to order, because they have to stand on the whole wall, which will cause a high room feeling.

Furniture upholstery

Upholstery in one color without a picture will help a small space to cope with the visual chaos in the room. A room will look minimalist if it is dominated by clean lines, simple shapes and monochromatic tones.
